Hudson Thames Overcomes Worries About Leading Marvel’s Latest Animated Series
Hudson Thames, the voice behind the titular character in Disney+’s upcoming show “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” recently opened up about his initial concerns regarding the series. In an interview with Collider, Thames admitted that his “biggest fear” was that the show would be perceived as “annoying and woke.” However, after reading the script, he was pleasantly surprised and found the show to be “awesome.”
Thames expressed, “I thought it was awesome. I mean, my biggest fear was that it was gonna be annoying and woke, and it wasn’t. I was like, ‘Yes, this is great, it’s so well written,’ like it feels real. I’m the oldest of five boys, so I feel like I kind of know what’s happening in their lives and in high school, and it felt like it was doing that justice.”
The term “woke” has gained popularity as a descriptor for individuals who are socially aware and advocate for issues related to race, gender, and sexual identity. However, it has also been used as a derogatory term by those who oppose diverse and inclusive media.
Disney has faced criticism from conservative groups for allegedly promoting “woke” messages in their content, drawing scrutiny from figures such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former President Trump, and ex-activist investor Nelson Peltz.
The cast of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” includes Colman Domingo, Kari Wahlgren, Hugh Dancy, Charlie Cox, and Vincent D’Onofrio. The show is set to premiere on Disney+ on January 29th.
Jeff Trammell serves as the head writer, with Mel Zwyer as the supervising director. The executive producers of the show are Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, and Jeff Trammell.
