Thailand’s expertise in creating captivating ghostly drama series is once again on display with the upcoming release of “The Legend of Nang Nak” across Asia next week. Directed by Taweewat Wantha and written by Sorarat Jirabovornwisut, the creative minds behind “Death Whisperer 1 and 2,” this 30-part series tells a haunting love story that transcends the boundaries between the living and the dead.
Produced by Minds@Work and Thai terrestrial broadcast group BEC World, with international sales handled by I.E. Entertainment, “The Legend of Nang Nak” will premiere on October 14 on Channel 3 in Thailand and on Netflix in several Asian countries including Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar. Indonesian viewers will be able to enjoy the series on the Vidio and Viu platforms.
The story is set in the early 19th century and follows Nak, who is promised to Lord Sanpimarn but falls in love with Mak and escapes to his village, Bang Phra Khanong. Despite facing challenges from Mak’s mother and a jealous acquaintance, their love persists. Tragically, Nak dies during childbirth while Mak is away at war, leaving her spirit to await his return. As villagers try to banish her ghostly presence, Nak’s wrath and undying love become powerful forces to be reckoned with.
Nak and Mak’s intertwined fates unfold against a backdrop of societal tensions and supernatural conflicts. Producer and managing director of Minds@Work, Narit (Pap) Yuvaboon, describes the love story of “Nang Nak” as a timeless Thai classic, comparable to Western tales like “Dracula” or “Romeo and Juliet.” Yuvaboon adds that their version of the story encompasses a range of emotions reflecting Thai traditions, including love, drama, comedy, and horror. The narrative is enriched with historical details and new characters, delving into the lives of Nak and Mak before their fateful meeting.
Yuvaboon, who previously worked with Film Bangkok on acclaimed Thai films such as “Fah Talai Jone,” “Bang Rajan,” and “Bangkok Dangerous,” founded Minds@Work in 2016. The production company initially focused on non-scripted shows before venturing into drama series production with projects like “Spirits of the Mekong River,” “My Sweet Assassin,” “World of Himmapan,” and “The Blaze of Naga.” Yuvaboon was also behind the success of last year’s hit movie “Tee Yod” (aka “Death Whisperer”), with its sequel set to hit Thai theaters this week.
As “The Legend of Nang Nak” makes its way to screens across Asia, viewers can expect a captivating blend of romance, drama, and supernatural elements that showcase Thailand’s skill in crafting compelling storytelling in the realm of ghostly dramas.
