As artificial intelligence continues to advance, it seems that Spotify has reached a significant milestone in its coding capabilities. During its recent fourth-quarter earnings call, Spotify’s co-CEO Gustav Söderström revealed that the top developers at the company have not written a single line of code since December. This revelation underscores how Spotify is leveraging AI to accelerate its development processes.

Throughout 2025, Spotify introduced over 50 new features and updates to its streaming app. More recently, the company rolled out innovative features such as AI-powered Prompted Playlists, Page Match for audiobooks, and About This Song. Engineers at Spotify are utilizing an internal system called “Honk” to enhance coding efficiency and product velocity. This system enables remote, real-time code deployment using generative AI, specifically Claude Code.

Söderström provided an example of how an engineer at Spotify can communicate with Claude via Slack on their phone during their morning commute to address bugs or add new features to the iOS app. The engineer receives the updated app version on Slack before arriving at the office, streamlining the deployment process. Spotify attributes Honk to significantly speeding up coding and deployment efforts, emphasizing that this is just the beginning of AI development for the company.

Moreover, Spotify highlighted its unique dataset focused on music-related queries, distinguishing it from other language learning models that rely on commoditized online resources like Wikipedia. Söderström explained that music-related questions often lack a definitive answer, as preferences vary geographically. For example, Americans lean towards hip-hop for workout music, while Europeans may prefer EDM or heavy metal. Spotify’s dataset continues to evolve with each model retraining, offering valuable insights into user preferences.

During the earnings call, analysts inquired about Spotify’s stance on AI-generated music. The company clarified that it allows artists and labels to specify the track’s metadata regarding its creation process while monitoring the platform for spam content.

Overall, Spotify’s integration of AI technologies has not only revolutionized its coding practices but also enhanced user experiences through innovative features and personalized recommendations. This shift towards AI-driven development signifies a significant step forward for the music streaming giant, setting the stage for continued advancements in the future.
