Spotify Users Express Disappointment with 2024 Wrapped Feature
After much anticipation, Spotify users are expressing disappointment with the streaming platform’s personalized year-in-review feature, Spotify Wrapped. Many are calling it “boring” or a “flop,” citing various reasons for their dissatisfaction.
One of the main complaints is that Spotify prioritized an AI podcast for Wrapped over the creative and engaging data stories that users have come to expect. Previous features like identifying music personalities, matching users to towns with similar musical tastes, and creating personalized games based on listening history were notably missing from this year’s Wrapped. Users are also upset about the lack of detailed statistics and the exclusion of information such as top music genres and top podcasts. Spotify has not provided clarification on how these decisions were made.
On social media platforms like X, users are sharing their feedback using the hashtag #SpotifyWrapped2024, with many describing this year’s Wrapped as “boring,” “underwhelming,” and a “disappointment.” Despite some users sharing screenshots of their Wrapped, the overall sentiment seems to lean towards dissatisfaction.
Spotify’s collaboration with Google to create an AI-powered podcast for Wrapped received mixed reviews. Some users appreciated the technology, while others expressed unease about the feature. The lack of interactive elements and quirky assessments that were present in previous years’ Wrapped experiences was also a point of contention among users.
Additionally, some users reported not being able to find their Wrapped 2024 playlist, while others noted the absence of their top podcasts in this year’s review. Spotify has clarified that users must have at least two top shows in order for Top Podcasts to be included in their Wrapped experience.
The graphics and art design used for Wrapped this year also received mixed reviews, with some users describing them as “simple” or “mid,” while others expressed liking them. The AI podcast feature, which Spotify hoped users would share on platforms like TikTok, also faced criticism from users who felt it did not live up to expectations.
Some users connected their disappointment with Wrapped to Spotify’s past layoffs, speculating that a lack of staffing combined with an overreliance on AI may have contributed to this year’s shortcomings. Spotify had laid off 2,300 employees in 2023, which reportedly impacted day-to-day operations.
Despite the backlash, Spotify has already begun work on next year’s Wrapped, with teams from various departments contributing to the effort. When asked about the decision-making process for Wrapped features, Spotify simply stated that they aim to bring a new and exciting experience to listeners each year as part of the “secret sauce” of Wrapped.
