Netflix is breaking away from its usual practice of restricting access to its mobile games behind a paywall by offering its upcoming “Squid Game” battle royale title for free to non-members for a limited time at launch.
Scheduled to debut on December 17, just before the premiere of the second season of the popular South Korean drama, “Squid Game: Unleashed” is being touted as the definitive video game based on the hit series. The game will be available for free to non-subscribers at least until the premiere of “Squid Game” Season 2 on December 26.
Similar to other mobile games from Netflix, “Squid Game: Unleashed” will not feature any ads or in-app purchases. The game promises fast-paced action, intense competition, and multiplayer battle royale gameplay. Players can challenge their friends or foes online and test their skills to outlast and defeat all other contestants in a series of twisted tournaments inspired by the show.
Netflix Games president Alain Tascan expressed excitement about making “Squid Game: Unleashed” accessible to a wider audience, marking the first time Netflix has offered a game for free to everyone. The game allows players to experience iconic challenges from the series, such as Glass Bridge and Red Light Green Light, in a multiplayer setting filled with chaos and excitement.
The announcement of “Squid Game: Unleashed” being available for free to non-members was made at the Game Awards in Los Angeles, where Netflix also unveiled new footage from the upcoming second season of the series.
This move by Netflix reflects the company’s commitment to engaging a broader audience and allowing fans of the show to immerse themselves in the world of “Squid Game” through an interactive gaming experience. With no barriers to entry, more players can join in the fun and compete in the dark and thrilling games inspired by the popular series.
