The potential for biological computers to revolutionize data centers and reduce energy consumption is gaining traction, with Australia-based start-up Cortical Labs leading the charge. The company is set to launch two “biological” data centers in Melbourne and Singapore, equipped with neuron-filled chips capable of playing games like Pong and Doom.

These biological computers, featuring neuronal cells connected to microelectrode arrays, can stimulate and measure cell responses when provided with data. Cortical Labs recently showcased the learning capabilities of its flagship computer, the CL1, by mastering the game Doom in just a week.

The upcoming data centers in Melbourne and Singapore will house a significant number of CL1 units, enabling Cortical Labs to expand its cloud-based brain-computing service. While biological computers are not new, they have been challenging to build and operate. Cortical Labs aims to make its biocomputer technology more accessible on a larger scale, setting it apart from other research groups worldwide.

Despite their potential for simple tasks like gaming, the full capabilities of biological computers and the best methods for training them remain unclear. Researchers like Michael Barros from the University of Essex emphasize the need for further exploration into learning, training, and programming these neurons effectively.

Cortical Labs asserts that their biological data centers will consume significantly less energy compared to traditional computing systems. Each CL1 unit requires only 30 watts of power, a fraction of what conventional AI chips demand. This energy-efficient approach could lead to substantial power savings when deployed on a larger scale.

While the technology is promising, experts like Tjeerd olde Scheper from Oxford Brookes University caution that it is still in its early stages. Challenges such as storing training results in memory, running computational algorithms, and retraining neurons for continuous use need to be addressed before widespread adoption.

In conclusion, the potential of biological computers to transform data centers and reduce energy consumption is promising but requires further research and development. Cortical Labs’ innovative approach to building biological data centers marks a significant step towards a more sustainable and efficient computing future.
