The dark and gloomy winter days in Boston are a stark reminder that the end of the year is approaching. As we count down to 2025, there are a number of pressing issues in the health care industry that continue to demand attention and action.

One such issue is the recent manifesto written by Luigi Mangione, the suspected killer of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, citing prominent critics of the U.S. health care system, including journalist Elisabeth Rosenthal and filmmaker Michael Moore. Rosenthal, known for her book “An American Sickness: How Healthcare Became Big Business and How You Can Take It Back,” expressed her dismay at being referenced in such a tragic context.

While life expectancies have been on the rise globally, a study published in JAMA Network Open highlights the growing gap between healthy years and the end of life. This gap has increased to almost 10 years on average, with Americans experiencing the largest disparity. The rise in chronic diseases among survivors of previously fatal illnesses is a concerning trend.

In a puzzling case, a child in California is suspected to have contracted bird flu, possibly through raw milk consumption. The uncertainty surrounding the case serves as a reminder of the ongoing threats posed by infectious diseases.

Meanwhile, a new wave of startups is using artificial intelligence to combat insurance denials that hinder access to medical services. By automating the appeals process, these companies aim to make it easier for patients and providers to challenge coverage rejections.

In Texas, a controversial new policy requiring hospitals to inquire about patients’ citizenship status has raised concerns about the impact on the patient-provider relationship. The move has been criticized for turning hospitals into checkpoints rather than places of refuge.

Across the pond in the UK, a study published in The BMJ reveals a decline in childhood vaccination rates, particularly in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas. The widening gap in vaccine uptake highlights disparities in access and acceptability.

As we navigate these complex issues in the health care landscape, it is essential to stay informed and engaged. From the impact of AI on insurance denials to the challenges of ensuring equitable access to vaccinations, the future of health care requires thoughtful consideration and proactive solutions.
