White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller criticized the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn President Donald Trump’s “emergency” tariffs, claiming they were essential for reviving U.S. manufacturing. He also hinted at alternative methods for Trump to reintroduce them.

“President Trump was elected with the promise of bringing back our supply chains, reshoring our manufacturing base, and reclaiming jobs from overseas,” Miller told Fox News host Laura Ingraham. “His tariff program over the past year has successfully achieved that.”

Miller pointed to record job growth, wage increases, and the return of crucial manufacturing jobs as evidence of Trump’s success. He also mentioned that inflation had dropped to an ideal rate of 1.4%, according to economists, although the Bureau of Labor Statistics recently reported it at 2.4%.

The Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling upheld the separation of powers by declaring that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not authorize the president to impose tariffs.

Citing Justice Clarence Thomas’s dissent, Miller argued that the president has historically been granted the authority to regulate foreign trade and levy duties on imports under the Emergency Economic Powers Act.

Despite the setback, Trump announced a 10% tariff on all U.S. imports, later increased to 15%. Miller affirmed that the administration remains determined to pursue its tariff agenda through other legal avenues.

He reassured Ingraham that despite the court’s ruling, Trump still has the authority under various sections to impose tariffs on foreign nations, hinting at an expansion of the current tariff program.

Inu Manak, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, suggested that Trump could use existing statutes to continue his tariff policies.
