The incident at Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles, where a thief broke into a flight school and hijacked a plane before crashing it into a building, has left authorities and the aviation community stunned.

The stolen single-engine Cessna, valued at $450,000, was owned by Anthony Nercessian, who runs LA Flight Academy. Nercessian received a phone call at 5 a.m. notifying him that one of his planes had been stolen from the flight school premises. The thief managed to start the plane but failed to get it off the ground before crashing it into a building, creating a gaping hole in the structure.

Security footage captured the dramatic moment when the plane nosedived into the building, causing significant damage. Despite the violent crash, there were no casualties reported, much to the relief of Nercessian and law enforcement officials.

The arrested suspect is currently facing charges of burglary and theft of an aircraft. Authorities are investigating whether anyone else was involved in the daring theft. The stolen plane sustained significant damage to its engine, rendering it inoperable.

Nercessian expressed gratitude that the incident did not result in any injuries or fatalities, emphasizing the danger and recklessness of stealing an airplane. Van Nuys Airport, known for its bustling air traffic and mix of general aviation, air-taxi, and commercial operations, poses unique challenges for pilots due to its high volume of aircraft movements.

The Federal Aviation Administration considers Van Nuys Airport one of the busiest general aviation airports in the United States, highlighting the need for heightened security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The aviation community is on high alert following this brazen act of theft and vandalism, underscoring the importance of safeguarding aircraft and aviation facilities against unauthorized access and criminal activities.
