Upgrades to Waimairi Stream Underway

Work has commenced on upgrades to a section of Christchurch’s Waimairi Stream, aimed at enhancing water quality, creating a healthier aquatic habitat, and stabilizing the banks along the Fendalton Park stream.

The targeted section of the stream runs along the southern edge of the park, starting near Medbury Terrace and meandering past the Fendalton Bowling Club.

The project, which began last week, is scheduled to be completed by the end of October.

Waimairi Stream, a tributary of the Ōtākaro Avon River, originates from Burnside Park and converges with Wairarapa Stream before joining the river at Mona Vale.

To improve flow diversity, boulder and cobble clusters will be strategically placed in the stream, ultimately enhancing water quality and promoting a healthier aquatic ecosystem.

In addition, native vegetation will be planted along the banks to mitigate sedimentation and erosion, while also fostering natural biodiversity.

The section of the stream is home to a variety of native species, including shortfin eels, longfin eels, upland bully, and introduced brown trout.

Meanwhile, ongoing waterway enhancements near Daresbury Park involve the replacement of old timber linings with new timber and rock linings, as well as the introduction of native riparian plants and fish hides.

These improvements at the Waimairi/Fendalton streams section are expected to be finalized by late November.
