Street psychiatrists: New type of team rises to care for vulnerable
SHARE

In the world of street psychiatry, psychiatrist Liz Frye is a shining example of compassion and dedication. For 16 years, she has been working with people who are unhoused and living on the streets, striving to offer a different experience for those who may have had negative encounters with healthcare workers in the past.

Frye understands the importance of building trust with her patients, many of whom have no reason to trust a stranger entering their lives. She approaches her work with humility, seeing it as a way to make amends for the shortcomings of the traditional healthcare system. Through small gestures and genuine care, Frye aims to meet people where they are and provide them with the support they need, whether it’s a pair of socks or a friendly conversation.

The issue of homelessness in the United States is staggering, with nearly 772,000 people estimated to lack a fixed residence in January 2024. The risk of death among the homeless population is also significantly higher than among those who have stable housing. Street medicine, including street psychiatry, has emerged as a crucial response to address this disparity.

Mental health is a critical issue among the homeless population, with a high prevalence of mental illness and substance use disorders. However, there are only a handful of street psychiatry teams in the country, highlighting the need for more resources and support in this area.

Once Frye establishes trust with her patients, she delves deeper into their mental health needs, connecting them with other street clinicians or hospital resources for additional support. While she acknowledges the limitations of her work in addressing the complex factors contributing to homelessness, Frye remains committed to sitting with her patients in authentic solidarity, sharing in their pain and suffering.

One of Frye’s guiding principles is to make few promises but to follow through on all of them. By showing up consistently and being honest with her patients, she has earned their trust and gained access to their most intimate concerns. Together, they work towards addressing these challenges and building a path towards healing and recovery.

In conclusion, Frye’s work as a street psychiatrist is a testament to the power of empathy and human connection in the face of adversity. Through her unwavering commitment to her patients and her willingness to meet them where they are, she embodies the true spirit of compassionate healthcare in the most challenging of circumstances.
