A Park Forest man has been sentenced to 48 years in federal prison for sexually abusing a young girl in his custody and possessing child pornography. Tercalo E. Thomas, 35, pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation of a minor and possession of child pornography before U.S. District Judge Steven C. Seeger in Chicago.
Court documents reveal that Thomas abused the girl from the age of 6 until his arrest at age 8, recording the abuse and distributing the images online in exchange for more child pornography. Upon his arrest, authorities found over 1,500 images of child sexual abuse on his cell phone, primarily featuring the victim but also including images of other young children.
The abuse took place in both Illinois and Indiana, exposing the victim to a sexually transmitted disease that required medical treatment. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elly Moheb stated in a sentencing memorandum that Thomas was a significant collector of child exploitation images and emphasized the severity of his actions.
Prosecutors sought a 600-month sentence, the maximum under sentencing guidelines, highlighting how Thomas exploited his position of trust with the child to produce explicit images and videos. In contrast, Thomas’ defense attorney, John Miraglia, argued for a mid-range sentence, noting his lack of prior criminal history and his participation in counseling while in custody.
The defense acknowledged Thomas’ addiction to adult pornography and his efforts to seek therapy for viewing child pornography before his arrest. However, he was deterred by potential criminal prosecution based on admissions made during therapy sessions.
