A man armed with a handgun was seriously injured after Denver Police Department officers shot him multiple times in the Cole neighborhood on Thursday night, according to police officials.

Police Chief Ron Thomas stated that officers were responding to a call about an armed individual around 6:25 p.m. when they encountered the man in the alley behind Annunciation Catholic School, located in the 3500 block between Lafayette and North Humboldt streets.

The man refused to drop the gun and instead made a threatening gesture, leading officers to open fire, Thomas explained.

The number of officers involved in the shooting and the exact number of shots fired remain unclear at this time.

Following the incident, officers administered first aid until an ambulance transported the man to Denver Health, where he underwent surgery and is currently in critical condition.

Fortunately, no officers sustained injuries during the altercation.

The shooting will undergo a thorough investigation by the Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Bureau of Investigation, and DPD’s Homicide Unit, with the findings to be presented to the Denver District Attorney’s Office.
