The plastic waste crisis is a significant issue that we face today, with millions of single-use utensils being discarded daily. This waste not only pollutes our oceans but also fills up landfills, where it will remain for centuries. In response to this growing problem, companies like USEFULL are stepping up to offer sustainable solutions for food service providers.

Rob Kutner, the Chief Revenue Officer at USEFULL, recently discussed their innovative approach on the Sustainability In Your Ear podcast. USEFULL has developed a reusable takeout container system specifically designed for high-volume environments like college cafeterias. Their goal is to reduce the reliance on single-use packaging and promote a more sustainable way of dining.

One of USEFULL’s key initiatives is a plastic buyback program, where they pay institutional cafeterias to switch from disposable containers to reusable ones. This program not only incentivizes cafeterias to make the switch but also helps them recoup some of the costs associated with the transition. As a result, USEFULL has been able to achieve a remarkable 99% return rate for their containers at universities like the University of Pittsburgh, Emory University, and the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

The economic benefits of using USEFULL’s system are clear. By purchasing existing plastic inventory from cafeterias, they remove the financial barrier to adopting sustainable packaging. Additionally, USEFULL provides a range of services such as tracking systems, POS integration, and local washing and inventory management to make the transition to reusable containers seamless for campuses.

In a recent report by Bain & Company, it was highlighted that Return on Investment (ROI) has become a driving force for the adoption of sustainable practices. Companies are starting to realize the long-term benefits of reducing waste and embracing more environmentally friendly solutions. USEFULL’s approach demonstrates that simple steps, rather than grandiose plans, can lead to tangible and profitable results in waste reduction.
