Sweet Film Memories, a Catalan independent production company, has recently acquired the option rights to the acclaimed book “Faster Than Life” by Celia Santos. This book tells the incredible true story of Dorothy Levitt, who was the first female racing driver in the United Kingdom. The company is currently in the process of developing the story into a six-part television miniseries.
Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century London, “Faster Than Life” will bring Levitt’s inspiring journey to life on screen. Levitt was a trailblazer who defied societal norms to make her mark in the male-dominated world of motor racing. In addition to her groundbreaking achievements on the race track, Levitt was also an inventor, a royal driving instructor, a suffragette, and a prolific writer. One of her notable inventions was the rearview mirror, a life-saving tool that is still used in vehicles today.
Olga Parera Bosch, the founder of Sweet Film Memories, describes “Faster Than Life” as a quintessentially British story that offers a unique perspective on 20th-century Britain through the eyes of a Spanish author. The miniseries promises to be a thrilling journey of resilience, defiance, and the pursuit of destiny, culminating in a poignant exploration of love, legacy, and the sacrifices made to break barriers. Viewers can expect to be immersed in the world of motor racing, with the sights and sounds of the race track coming to life as Dorothy takes on her adversaries on and off the track.
In addition to capturing the excitement of motor racing, “Faster Than Life” will delve into the emotional and political challenges that Levitt faced, from rivalries on the race circuit to the fight for women’s rights and social equality. Sweet Film Memories is currently seeking co-production partners in the UK and Europe, with plans to take advantage of tax credits available in Spain, the UK, and another European country.
The aim of “Faster Than Life” is to inspire audiences worldwide with its themes of courage, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of recognition in a world that may not be ready for trailblazing women. The series promises to be a compelling and thought-provoking exploration of Levitt’s extraordinary life and legacy.
