The Taiwanese American Arts Council (TAAC) presents an exciting new project called Eco Art on Island, which aims to explore the interconnectedness between artists and island ecologies. This six-month-long series of exhibitions and programs, set to open on May 17 at House 17 on Governors Island in New York City, seeks to address the pressing issues of climate change and sustainability through creative expression.

In a world where economic growth often takes precedence over environmental concerns, Eco Art on Island serves as a timely reminder of the need to prioritize ecological awareness. By bringing together artists, curators, medical professionals, and environmental experts, the project seeks to foster a collaborative approach to addressing the global climate crisis. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing the impact of human actions on the natural world and the urgent need for shared responsibility.

Both Taiwan and Governors Island, where the residency is based, face unique ecological challenges due to their small size and vulnerability to environmental shifts. Eco Art on Island seeks to raise awareness of these issues and encourage a dialogue on sustainable living practices. Through localized, poetic, and socially engaged artistic practices, the participating artists aim to explore themes of human ecology, cultural trauma, and planetary health.

The project features a diverse group of artists, including Chia-Wei Chang, Eugenie Chao, Huey-Min Chuang, and many others, who will showcase their work in a series of thematic and solo exhibitions. The schedule includes thematic exhibitions from May to November 2025, with each event offering a unique perspective on the intersection of art, ecology, and sustainability.

Eco Art on Island is a call to action for artists to use their creative talents to address the pressing issues of our time. By engaging with environmental advocacy and mental health through art, the project aims to inspire a deeper connection with the natural world and promote a more sustainable future for all. For more information on the project, visit TAAC’s website at taac-us.org.

Founded in 2014, the Taiwanese American Arts Council (TAAC) is dedicated to building cultural bridges through art to deepen understanding, empathy, and ecological awareness. Led by President Dr. Tzu-Shong Yang and Executive Director Luchia Meihua Lee, TAAC invites visitors to explore the intersection of art and ecology through the transformative power of Eco Art on Island.
