Tangitau, Shearer shine for Highlanders

Caleb Tangitau continues to shine as a key player for the Highlanders, and the team may have discovered another rising star during an unusual Super Rugby match. The game against Moana Pasifika was interrupted for approximately 40 minutes due to a power outage at North Harbour Stadium. Once the match resumed, Sky Sport could not broadcast the action.

Despite these challenges, Highlanders’ fans witnessed an impressive performance. Tangitau excelled, helping the Highlanders rebound from a significant previous defeat with a 39-19 win over Moana Pasifika. The dynamic winger scored two tries in the first half and was essential in setting up a try just 14 seconds into the second half.

In addition to Tangitau’s prowess, Nic Shearer, wearing the Stags No 9 jersey, made an impactful Super Rugby debut. Shearer contributed by setting up two tries, scoring the second-half opener, and displaying considerable energy and offensive skill.

The Highlanders’ victory was bolstered by a flawless lineout, providing a solid boost as they head into the Easter break. Although their second-half performance was not as strong, they still managed to maintain their lead.

The first half highlighted Tangitau’s precision and Moana Pasifika’s lack of discipline, with a 9-0 penalty count favoring the Highlanders at halftime. Tangitau scored his fifth try of the season early in the game, and despite a knock-on in the 20th minute, he soon added another try following a pass from Shearer.

Jona Nareki contributed significantly to the Highlanders’ third try, while Jack Taylor scored the fourth, concluding a dominant first half. The Highlanders also showcased strong defense against a struggling Moana Pasifika squad, with Tanielu Tele’a standing out in the midfield.

Tangitau’s quick reaction to the second-half kick-off led to a try by Shearer, marking an impressive debut. Although Moana Pasifika managed to score through Niko Jones, their discipline faltered again as William Havili and Glen Vaihu received yellow cards. The Highlanders capitalized with a try by Veveni Lasaqa, though they conceded a soft try to Millennium Sanerivi following a kickoff error.

A chaotic sequence ensued with Moana scoring while short-handed and a power failure plunging the stadium into darkness, halting TV coverage. The game eventually continued without broadcast, with no significant events reported afterward.

The Highlanders dealt with last-minute roster changes, missing Ethan de Groot and Timoci Tavatavanawai, while Jacob Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens exited at halftime due to an ankle injury.
