As artificial intelligence continues to make its way into schools, a paradox is emerging. Educators are grappling with the tension between limiting student use of A.I. while increasingly using A.I. tools themselves. This has sparked difficult ethical questions and concerns about the impact of A.I. on teaching and learning.

One of the main concerns among educators is the issue of cheating and shortcuts. Many students are using A.I. apps to solve math problems, which some educators consider a form of cheating. However, A.I. tools can also be used to personalize assignments and engage students in learning. For example, chatbots can create different scenarios for students to work on, making learning more interactive and exciting.

There are also gray areas when it comes to using A.I. in the classroom. Teachers like Jon Gold have found generative A.I. useful in lesson planning, but emphasize the importance of transparency in how they use A.I. with students. It’s crucial to explain to students how A.I. is being used in the classroom and to model ethical use of the technology.

A.I. can also be a valuable tool for teachers when it comes to grading student work. Companies like MagicSchool and Brisk Teaching offer A.I. products that provide instant feedback on student writing, saving teachers time and allowing them to assign more writing assignments. Automated scoring of student writing is also being used in high-stakes scenarios, such as exams that determine whether students graduate from high school.

Despite the benefits of using A.I. in schools, there are concerns about the impact of A.I. on teaching and learning. Some educators worry that tech companies are focusing on A.I. applications that disrupt the human relationships at the core of education, instead of creating tools to ease bureaucratic burdens. It’s essential for school leaders to carefully evaluate A.I. products and consider how they can best support teaching and learning.

As A.I. continues to be integrated into schools, educators must navigate the ethical and practical considerations of using this technology. It’s important for educators to be informed about A.I. and its implications for teaching and learning, and to consider how A.I. can be used to enhance education rather than detract from it. Ultimately, finding the right balance between limiting student use of A.I. and leveraging A.I. tools to support teaching and learning will be key in shaping the future of education.
