Team India bowling coach Morne Morkel addressed the speculation surrounding 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s potential debut in the second T20I against England in Manchester on July 4. Suryavanshi earned a spot in the Indian T20I squad following an exceptional performance in the IPL 2026, leading to his selection for the Ireland and England series.
Despite his inclusion, Suryavanshi did not make it into the playing XI for India’s two losses against Ireland. He also spent the first match against England on the bench, which has led to increased anticipation about his debut.
Morkel emphasized that the management’s priority is to support the players who have recently secured the T20 World Cup for India.
In response to questions about Suryavanshi featuring in the second England T20I, Morkel stated to the media (via Indian Express):
“It’s not as straightforward as saying, ‘Let’s play him.’ It’s a matter of backing the guys who’ve won World Cups and done really well in tough situations, then building from there and seeing how we can make our top order as strong as possible in these conditions. At the end of the day, it’s about putting performances on the board. We also don’t want to bat players out of position.”
He further remarked:
“We also need to respect the fact that we’ve got the No. 1 batter in T20 cricket, Abhishek Sharma. Sanju was the player of the World Cup and had a great IPL. As a coaching staff, it’s only fair to show faith and back your players. Yes, there’s a young man knocking on the door, and it’s exciting, but I reckon not just for those two players at the top, but for the rest of the group, it’s a good sign that we show we back you guys.”
Sanju Samson, one of India’s openers, has struggled recently, managing only six runs at an average of two across three matches against Ireland and England. This has sparked discussions regarding his position at the top of the order.

Morne Morkel commended Vaibhav Suryavanshi for integrating well into the Indian team and showing promise during training sessions. If Suryavanshi makes his debut in the current England series, he will become the youngest Indian to do so at 15, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 16 years and 205 days.
“He’s fitted in very, very well. If you follow the boys on Instagram, there have already been a lot of photos posted with him. The way the guys have welcomed him has been fantastic. At the international stage as a 15-year-old, it can be intimidating. But in the couple of net sessions we’ve had, he’s been very impressive,” said Morkel on Suryavanshi (via the aforementioned source).
In the ongoing series against England, the first T20I concluded without a result due to heavy rain that prevented the second innings from being played after India had scored a solid 189 in their 20 overs.
