A tragic incident overshadowed World Cup celebrations in western Spain, as a 13-year-old lost their life and two others were injured when a fountain partially collapsed.Â
The accident took place shortly after midnight on Sunday in Ciudad Rodrigo, a historic city with a population of about 12,000, located in Salamanca province near the Portuguese border.
Spain secured a 1-0 victory over Argentina in extra time, marking the nation’s second World Cup triumph and sparking widespread celebrations.Â
According to regional emergency services, hundreds of locals had gathered at the Arbol Gordo fountain in the city center when the top part of the monument detached and hit several people.
Ciudad Rodrigo’s town hall released a statement offering condolences to the victim’s family.
“The entire city feels this loss and accompanies the minor’s friends and family in their grief … What should have been a celebration of the Spanish national team’s World Cup victory has turned into a tragedy.”
