Two teenagers from Pennsylvania are facing legal charges after being implicated in fatal TikTok-inspired reckless driving stunts, resulting in one death and severe injuries to another individual.

The district attorney’s office specifically named TikTok and Instagram, noting that similar videos have also circulated on various other social media platforms.

A spokesperson for TikTok stated that videos featuring dangerous activities such as table and car surfing violate their community guidelines. Remarkably, they reported that 99.8% of such videos are removed proactively, with 92.4% of those removed for violations being taken down prior to any views.

Although the two incidents were separately occurring and involved distinct stunts, both took place in Northampton County, situated 85 miles from New York City and 80 miles north of Philadelphia.

In one incident, a 17-year-old tragically lost his life on June 1 while riding on a folding table secured to the back of a friend’s car, according to Northampton County District Attorney Stephen Baratta.

Investigators claimed that the friend drove recklessly, causing the rider on the table to be thrown into a parked vehicle, leading to his death, as stated by Baratta’s office.

The victim was identified as David Nagy, 17, according to reports from FOX 29 Philadelphia.

In a separate incident on March 18, a 19-year-old woman allegedly drove through a parking lot while her 20-year-old friend was “surfing” on her car trunk.

The friend who fell from the trunk sustained “catastrophic head injuries that are expected to be permanent,” according to Baratta’s office.

Neither teen is presently accused of “criminogenic thinking,” indicating there was no intent to harm their friends.

However, Baratta noted that they are held criminally accountable due to the extreme negligence and recklessness observed in the situations.

Baratta remarked that both families had close relationships built on trust with the accused, making the outcome even more tragic. “That’s what makes this situation particularly heartbreaking,” he expressed during a news briefing covered by FOX 29.

Baratta further disclosed that neither driver has a prior criminal history, and neither victim’s family is advocating for incarceration.

Consequently, he stated that his office will not pursue jail time for the defendants, should they be amenable to plea agreements.

The families involved wish to utilize these cases as a means to encourage wiser choices among teenagers.

“These families seek accountability and hope these actions will deter other youth who might be tempted to engage in perilous social media challenges that have the potential to harm others,” stated Baratta. He also noted that such hazardous activities are not limited to Pennsylvania; a similar car surfing incident in Utah last year left a 15-year-old girl with a life-altering brain injury.
