A tragic incident unfolded in Queens this week as a female tenant was charged with the murder of a building superintendent over a dispute regarding back rent. The victim, Jose Portillo, was found stabbed, battered, and wrapped in garbage bags inside an apartment in Kew Gardens Hills.

Sandra Coto Navarro, 48, was charged with second-degree murder, tampering with physical evidence, and weapon possession in connection to the death of Portillo. The altercation reportedly escalated when Portillo entered the apartment where Coto Navarro lived with a man to discuss the overdue rent. The property owner saw Portillo enter the unit but never saw him leave, prompting concern from his brother and ultimately leading to the discovery of his body.

Portillo suffered blunt force trauma to his head, a stab wound to the neck, and cuts behind his knees. The motive behind the murder was revealed to be a dispute over $24,000 in back rent that Coto Navarro and her husband owed. Coto Navarro allegedly attacked Portillo when he arrived to collect the rent, with her husband being questioned and later released after video evidence proved his absence during the incident.

Neighbors expressed shock and disbelief over the tragic event, with one describing Portillo as a kind and helpful individual who had been the building superintendent for 20 to 30 years. The community mourned the loss of a good man who was always willing to assist those in need.

As investigations continued, a man was also taken into custody though it remained unclear if he would face any charges in connection to the murder. The neighborhood was left reeling from the unthinkable and unspeakable act, with a single rose laid on Portillo’s doorstep as a tribute to the beloved superintendent.

The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the consequences that can arise from disputes over financial matters and the importance of resolving conflicts through peaceful means. The community will continue to grapple with the loss of a respected member, while authorities work to bring justice to those involved in the senseless act of violence.
