A young woman who confronted a notorious landlord in Dunedin is speaking out about her harrowing experience in hopes of preventing others from falling into the same trap.

Zoe Eckhoff, 19, along with two friends, signed a lease for a Queen St property, only to discover a host of issues upon moving in. The property was riddled with problems including vegetation blocking gutters, black mould, grease, borer dust, and peeling paint.

“It was a nightmare, there was just clutter everywhere. Pots and pans left outside, borer infestations, mould on everything,” Eckhoff described.

Feeling traumatized by the experience, Eckhoff and her flatmates decided to withhold rent and take the landlord, Man-Oock Holdings, to the Tenancy Tribunal.

After a lengthy legal battle, the tenants were able to terminate the lease, but felt the system favored the landlord. Eckhoff expressed frustration at the lack of accountability for landlords.

Following their ordeal, the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment launched an initiative to inspect rental properties in Dunedin for compliance with health and safety regulations.

Eckhoff encouraged others to be vigilant when dealing with landlords and to report any issues they encounter.

The situation shed light on the need for stronger regulations to protect tenants from unscrupulous landlords.

Despite facing challenges, Eckhoff remains hopeful that her experience will lead to positive change in the rental market.
