An assistant principal at Collins Intermediate School in Corsicana, Texas, was tragically injured by a student during a classroom altercation. Candra Rogers was responding to a report of students fighting when a middle school student threw a clothes hanger at her face, causing severe damage to her eye.
The incident occurred on August 15, when the student first threw chairs at Rogers, which she managed to dodge, before hurling a hanger that pierced her right eye. Rogers described the moment as blood poured out of her head and she stumbled out of the classroom door. Paramedics arrived at the scene and decided to airlift Rogers to a hospital due to the severity of her injury.
Rogers suffered blindness in her right eye, with doctors considering the possibility of removing it if it is deemed untreatable. She expressed hope for a miracle to restore her sight and is scheduled to undergo reconstructive surgery on her eyelid.
Following the incident, a student was taken into police custody, and the case was referred to the Navarro County District Attorney’s Office and the Juvenile Probation Department. The student has been banned from the school campus, and charges are expected to be filed.
Rogers, who had recently joined the Corsicana district, emphasized the need for better protection for educators in the face of aggressive students. She called for increased public school funding and criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott and the state legislature for not raising funding levels despite a budget surplus.
As Rogers continues her recovery, the school district has not provided an estimated return date for her. She urged for more support for educators and students alike, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe and conducive learning environment for all.
