A former Texas high school teacher, Molly Colleen Spears, has finally turned herself in to police after being accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a male student. The incident dates back to June 12, 2023, and Spears has been charged with second-degree improper relationship between an educator and a student. She is also alleged to have communicated with the student via text messages to arrange meetings.
Spears, 35, worked as an arts and language teacher at Barbers Hill School in Mont Belvieu before resigning from her position in June 2023. The district confirmed her resignation and stated that they would not comment on any ongoing investigations. Spears had been employed at the Barbers Hill Independent School District since August 2021.
Following an indictment by a Chambers County grand jury on February 8, 2024, Spears had a warrant issued for her arrest. Surprisingly, she was only arrested this week, with her teaching certificate already listed as “inactive” since September 2024 due to alleged misconduct. It is unclear why there was a delay in her arrest despite the existing warrant.
Spears’ defense attorney, Christopher L. Tritico, stated that she was only made aware of the charges two days prior to her arrest. She surrendered to the Chambers County Jail and was released on a $50,000 bond. If convicted, Spears could face up to 20 years in prison for her actions.
The Barbers Hill ISD Police Department has not provided any comments on the matter. This incident comes after the school district gained attention for suspending a black student with dreadlocks for violating the dress code policy.
Overall, the case of Molly Colleen Spears highlights the serious consequences of inappropriate relationships between educators and students. The legal process will now determine the outcome of this disturbing situation, with Spears facing potential imprisonment if found guilty.
