A shocking case out of Texas has come to a close as a teenage boy has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his girlfriend’s grandmother. Uriah Urick, 18, was found guilty of the fatal shooting of Tammy King, 61, in her Bacliff home back in February. Jurors deliberated for less than four hours before handing down the life sentence.
During the trial, prosecutors revealed that Urick and his girlfriend, Tara Lynn King, 17, had been planning the murder for weeks. The couple intended to kidnap Tammy King and steal money, prescription pills, antique coins, and guns from her safe. Text messages and Instagram conversations presented in court showed the chilling plot unfold.
Leading up to the murder, Urick and Tara King had told their friends false stories about the grandmother’s alleged abuse and drug use. Witnesses testified that the couple boasted about having money and even made disturbing remarks about the crime. Urick mentioned to a friend that he couldn’t get the smell of burning flesh out of his nose, indicating the gruesome nature of the murder.
Despite the evidence presented, Urick’s defense attorney argued that the crime was not premeditated and that the state failed to prove that robbery was the motive for the murder. However, the jury ultimately found Urick guilty and handed down the life sentence.
Tara King, Urick’s girlfriend and accomplice in the murder, is still awaiting her trial for capital murder. No start date has been set for her case yet. The community is left shocked and saddened by the heinous crime committed by these young individuals. The tragic loss of Tammy King has left a scar on the community, and justice has been served with Urick’s life sentence.
