On Wednesday, Michigan Rep. Shri Thanedar was defeated in the primary by democratic socialist Donavan McKinney. This win marks another success for progressives who have consistently replaced incumbents in secure blue districts.
The 13th District, represented by Thanedar, was a significant focus for organizations like Justice Democrats. These groups aim to challenge incumbent members they feel do not align with their constituents. Justice Democrats played a crucial role in bringing McKinney into the race and invested nearly $1 million in his campaign, making it one of their major initiatives this election cycle.
State Representative McKinney received support from various progressive House Democrats, including some Congressional Black Caucus members who chose to oppose party leadership. The leadership had supported Thanedar in this predominantly Black district based in Detroit.
There was also discontent among some of Thanedar’s colleagues due to his attempt to initiate a vote on impeaching President Donald Trump last year, a move he eventually retracted.
With the district being a stronghold for Democrats, McKinney is anticipated to secure a straightforward victory in November.
