The SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production ETF (XOP) has seen a remarkable 43% increase in value year to date, thanks to a surge in WTI prices following disruptions in the Hormuz region. This surge has propelled XOP to trade near $179, with its performance heavily reliant on the speed at which tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz returns to normal levels. The fund’s future gains hinge on this crucial variable, with potential for significant fluctuations based on the timeline.

XOP is structured as a diversified portfolio of U.S. exploration and production companies, making it more responsive to fluctuations in crude prices compared to integrated majors. The fund boasts a low expense ratio of 0.35%, making it an affordable way to capitalize on the cash flow potential of U.S. shale. Top holdings like Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Occidental, and ConocoPhillips are all generating substantial profits at current price levels, adding to the allure of XOP for investors.

Looking ahead, the pace at which Persian Gulf production resumes will be the key determinant of XOP’s performance in the coming months. The latest forecasts from the EIA suggest a decline in Brent prices to $89 per barrel in Q4 2026 and $79 in 2027 as Middle East production ramps up. Any acceleration in production recovery could dampen XOP’s gains, while a slower return could provide further upside potential.

One of the unique aspects of XOP is its exposure to Venture Global (VG), a major LNG exporter and the fund’s largest holding at 3.11% of assets. VG’s fortunes are closely tied to the Henry Hub-to-JKM spread, with any resurgence in Qatari LNG exports likely to impact JKM prices and, in turn, Venture Global’s profitability. Monitoring VG’s quarterly cargo count and the EIA’s LNG reports will be crucial in gauging XOP’s performance in the LNG market.

In conclusion, keeping an eye on the EIA’s production estimates and Venture Global’s cargo tally will be essential in assessing XOP’s performance going forward. With the potential for both macroeconomic and fund-specific factors to influence its trajectory, investors need to stay informed and proactive in managing their investments in XOP.
