Suburban Man Charged with First-Degree Murder in Thanksgiving Day Slaying

A suburban man has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal Thanksgiving Day slaying of a man in Garfield Ridge, a killing prosecutors say stemmed from suspicions that the victim was pulling on car doors in the neighborhood.

Chicago police responded to a call on November 27 in the 5100 block of South Luna Avenue where Paul Kalec, 27, was found lying unresponsive in the street. He was taken to Stroger Hospital but succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.

According to a witness, a man approached Kalec on foot, pulled out a handgun, and fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene. Police recovered a firearm and nine shell casings at the location which were linked to Richard Negron, a suspect in the case.

After questioning a “person of interest” following the shooting, detectives later arrested and charged Richard Negron, 31, with first-degree murder. Prosecutors stated that Negron was identified on video and by a witness as the assailant who shot Kalec. It was revealed that Negron believed Kalec was attempting to steal from parked cars in the area, although no stolen items were found in Kalec’s possession and he was unarmed.

Judge Deidre Dyer ordered Negron to be detained in connection with the case, citing the excessive and disproportionate response of shooting Kalec nine times, even after he fell to the ground. The judge emphasized that Negron’s actions were unwarranted based on his suspicions about Kalec’s activities.
