Art can be a powerful tool for expressing resistance and resilience, and here at Hyperallergic, we celebrate those who stand up against power and oppression. In our 2025 edition of the 20 Most Powerless People in the Art World, we honor individuals and communities who have shown incredible strength in the face of adversity.

1. International Art Students: These students come to the United States seeking a better education, only to face exorbitant tuition fees and threats to their security. Despite these challenges, they continue to pursue their dreams.

2. Arts Organizations That Get Federal Grants: Many museums and organizations had promised grants revoked by the government, leading to financial instability and programmatic disruptions.

3. Undocumented Artists: Often overlooked by the art establishment, these artists live under constant fear of deportation and separation from their families.

4. Smithsonian Institution: Reliant on government funding, the Smithsonian faces ongoing threats and challenges from the current administration.

5. Trans Artists: Facing discrimination and denial of their identities, trans and nonbinary artists continue to create powerful work despite the obstacles they face.

6. LA Artists Who Lost Everything: Devastated by wildfires that destroyed their homes and studios, these artists received support from the community in the wake of the tragedy.

7. Palestinian Solidarity Activists: Silenced and targeted for speaking out against injustice, these activists continue to fight for their cause despite the risks.

8. Creators of No Other Land: Facing violence and censorship, the filmmakers behind this documentary about settler violence in Palestine have shown incredible courage in the face of adversity.

9. White House East Wing: Once a symbol of American democracy, the White House East Wing was demolished to make way for a luxury ballroom, reflecting the erosion of democratic values.

10. The Louvre’s Security System: In a bizarre turn of events, the Louvre’s security system was compromised by a simple password, leading to a major security breach.

These individuals and organizations may be deemed powerless by society, but their resilience and determination make them truly powerful in their own right. As we look ahead to a new year, let us continue to support and uplift those who face adversity in the art world and beyond.
