Top Contenders in the Comedy Race at the Emmy Awards
Variety TV editors Michael Schneider and Emily Longeretta recently discussed the top contenders in the comedy race at this year’s Emmy Awards on Variety’s Award Circuit, presented by Paramount+.
Two major contenders in this year’s Emmy race are “The Bear” and “Hacks,” both of which have been past winners.
‘”Hacks’ was the surprise winner last year, beating out “The Bear.” According to Schneider, “Jean Smart has been winning every single year and she’ll continue to as long as that national treasure is in this category.”
Despite losing to “Hacks” last year, “The Bear” is expected to be a strong contender this year.
“It has 36 nominations in the past, with 21 wins. The cast, including Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Liza Colon-Zayas, has been impressive. Creator Christopher Storer also won directing last year. While the last season may not have been as talked about, the timing of the release could work in its favor for Emmy voting,” Longeretta added.
“Abbott Elementary” is another show to watch out for in this year’s race.
“‘Abbott Elementary’ continues to impress with its nominations and wins. Despite a less successful year last year, the show has consistently improved. The cast, including Quinta Brunson, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tyler James Williams, and Janelle James, is outstanding and deserving of recognition,” Schneider noted.
