Mikayla Blakes made history with a perfectly timed jump, grabbing the rebound and tipping in the game-winning shot with just 0.8 seconds left on the clock. This victory against rival Tennessee marked a significant moment for Vanderbilt, their first win since 2019. However, the real surprise came after the game when Mikayla realized that her usually reserved father, Monroe Blakes, had stormed the court in excitement.

Monroe, a former player and Hall of Fame member at Division II St. Michael’s College in Vermont, couldn’t contain his emotions as he witnessed his daughter’s incredible achievement. Just the day before, he had experienced a similar rush of pride when Mikayla’s older brother, Jaylen Blakes, hit a game-winning shot for Stanford against North Carolina. The odds of both siblings hitting buzzer-beaters on consecutive days seemed unimaginable.

Jaylen, who had transferred to Stanford after three years at Duke, had always dreamed of making a big play at the Dean E. Smith Center. His game-winning stepback jumper fulfilled that dream, leaving both his father and sister in awe. Mikayla, who leads all freshmen nationally in scoring, was ecstatic for her brother’s success, even though she missed the shot live due to a poor stream.

The following day, Monroe and his wife flew to Nashville to support Mikayla in her game, maintaining their commitment to be present at every one of their children’s games. As the match against Tennessee intensified, a friend jokingly suggested that Mikayla might hit another game-winner. Little did they know that lightning would strike twice in one weekend.

When Mikayla’s last-second tip-in secured the victory for Vanderbilt, Monroe couldn’t contain his excitement and rushed onto the court. Jaylen, watching from Stanford, couldn’t believe the incredible turn of events and celebrated from afar. The bond between the siblings shone through as they exchanged congratulatory calls and messages in the aftermath of their respective heroics.

Reflecting on the weekend filled with unforgettable moments, Monroe expressed his pride in his children’s competitive spirit and unwavering support for each other. The Blakes family’s love and dedication to each other have paved the way for their success on the basketball court. As Monroe responds to the flood of messages congratulating his family, he cherishes the memories created by his children’s remarkable achievements.

The Blakes family’s story is a testament to the power of love, support, and unwavering dedication to one another. Their remarkable weekend of back-to-back game-winning shots will forever be etched in their hearts as a symbol of their incredible bond and shared passion for the game of basketball.
