CBS Cancels “The Equalizer” Reboot After Five Seasons
CBS has made the decision to cancel the reboot of “The Equalizer” after five seasons, as reported by Variety. The series, led by Queen Latifah, was the last remaining bubble show at the network, with the season finale on May 4 now serving as the series finale. This news comes after CBS also canceled the freshman multi-cam “Poppa’s House” and both “FBI: International” and “FBI: Most Wanted.” Additionally, a potential spinoff for “The Equalizer” was also not picked up by the network.
The cancellation of “The Equalizer” may not come as a surprise to some, as the show was on the bubble last season as well. Being co-produced by CBS Studios and Universal Television, the financial aspect of the show may have played a role in the decision, especially given the network’s recent pickups for new drama shows for the upcoming season. These include a new “FBI” franchise starring Tom Ellis and the comedy pilot “DMV” among others.
Although “The Equalizer” will not be returning for another season, CBS has announced renewals for other shows such as the comedy “Ghosts” and more seasons of “Tracker” and “NCIS.” The show, a reimagining of the 1980s series, followed Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, a former CIA operative assisting those in need. The series also starred Tory Kittles, Adam Goldberg, Liza Lapira, Laya DeLeon Hayes, and Lorraine Toussaint.
Developed for television by Andrew Marlowe and Terri Miller, “The Equalizer” was based on the original series co-created by Richard Lindheim. The executive producers included Joseph C. Wilson, Queen Latifah, Debra Martin Chase, Shakim Compere, John Davis, John Fox, Loretha Jones, and Rob Hanning.
