Enrollment in Computer Science Declines at UC Campuses

Recent data from the San Francisco Chronicle has revealed a concerning trend at University of California campuses this fall. For the first time in years, enrollment in computer science programs has dropped system-wide. After a 3% decline in 2024, this year saw a further decrease of 6%. This dip comes at a time when overall college enrollment is on the rise nationally, indicating a shift in student interests away from traditional computer science degrees.

One notable exception to this trend is UC San Diego, which introduced a dedicated major in Artificial Intelligence this fall, bucking the downward enrollment trend.

China’s Embrace of AI Education

While the decline in computer science enrollment may seem like a temporary setback, it reflects a larger global trend. Chinese universities have been aggressively promoting AI literacy, with nearly 60% of students and faculty using AI tools daily. Schools like Zhejiang University have made AI coursework mandatory, signaling a shift towards treating AI as essential infrastructure rather than a threat. In China, proficiency in AI is no longer optional but a prerequisite for success.

Rise of AI Programs in U.S. Universities

To catch up with international trends, many U.S. universities have launched AI-specific programs in recent years. MIT’s “AI and decision-making” major has become one of the largest on campus, while institutions like the University of South Florida and the University at Buffalo have seen significant enrollment in new AI and cybersecurity programs. Despite some resistance from faculty, universities like UNC Chapel Hill are pushing for integration of AI into their curriculum to prepare students for the future.

Student Preferences Shifting Towards AI Programs

Parents and students are also influencing this shift, with a growing preference for majors that are perceived as less vulnerable to AI automation. Mechanical and electrical engineering programs are gaining popularity as alternatives to traditional computer science degrees. Enrollment data indicates that students are opting for AI-focused programs, with universities like the University of Southern California, Columbia University, Pace University, and New Mexico State University all introducing AI degrees to meet the demand.

The Future of AI Education

While the current recalibration in enrollment patterns may be a response to immediate concerns, it serves as a wake-up call for universities to adapt quickly to the changing landscape of AI education. With the debate over AI integration in classrooms becoming obsolete, the focus now shifts to whether American universities can keep pace with the demand for AI-focused programs. The key question remains whether institutions will act swiftly or risk losing students to those that have already embraced AI education.
