A live-action television series inspired by Lee Falk’s renowned comic strip “The Phantom” is being developed by Reginald Hudlin, known for “Candy Cane Lane” and “Sidney,” according to Variety.

Hudlin is set to both direct and produce the series, which is currently in the developmental phase at King Features, a company owned by Hearst.

“The Phantom,” a precursor to superheroes like Batman and Iron Man, was first introduced 90 years ago as a comic strip. The character, known as “The Ghost Who Walks,” is recognized as the first superhero in costume. Interest in the character has been revitalized through digital editions, including Alex Segura’s “Phantom 2040” webcomic, which offers a modern take on the classic story.

Hearst, the owner of “The Phantom” franchise, boasts a global readership of over 29 million. Key markets for the franchise include the Nordics, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, the U.K., Europe, and India.

A new comic book series of “The Phantom” is set to debut with Mad Cave Comics in 2025, with additional releases planned over the following two years. Hearst also announced plans for an immersive location-based entertainment experience related to “The Phantom,” which will be revealed later this year.

Hudlin, who has extensive experience in both film and television, is also well-versed in the comic book industry. He has previously written “Black Panther” issues for Marvel Comics and is a co-owner of Milestone Media, a comic book company. A feature film focusing on Milestone’s Static Shock character is also in the works.

“The development of a live-action series for the iconic comic strip ‘The Phantom’ marks a pivotal expansion to meet the current cultural zeitgeist for this brand,” stated King Features president C.J. Kettler to Variety. “By partnering with award-nominated director Reginald Hudlin, who possesses a deep reverence for the comic industry and source material itself, we are confident this adaptation will meet the high expectations of both longtime and new fans globally.”
