The Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum is a treasure trove of design and history, housed in the opulent Carnegie Mansion in Manhattan. The museum’s seventh design triennial, “Making Home,” explores the concept of home through the works of artists and designers from diverse backgrounds. This edition of the triennial, presented in collaboration with the National Museum of African American History and Culture, delves into themes such as migration, climate change, aging, healthcare, and memory.

The exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the various interpretations of home and design, showcasing 25 newly commissioned installations that reflect the rich and expansive subject of home. From site-specific installations in the mansion’s rooms to utopian visions of home and future-looking designs for transitional housing, “Making Home” offers a thought-provoking exploration of what home means in today’s world.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is the diverse range of artworks and installations that tackle important social issues. From Liam Lee and Tommy Mishima’s “Game Room,” which examines the philanthropic legacy of Andrew Carnegie, to the Lenape Center’s “Welcome to Territory,” which pays homage to the indigenous history of the land, each piece offers a unique perspective on the meaning of home.

The exhibition also includes interactive spaces like the Black Artists and Designers Guild’s “The Underground Library,” which celebrates Black culture, and Mona Chalabi and SITU Research’s “Patterns of Life,” which sheds light on the destruction of homes in conflict zones. These installations invite visitors to reflect on the complexities of the concept of home and the impact of social and political issues on our sense of belonging.

“Making Home—Smithsonian Design Triennial” is a must-see exhibition that offers a thought-provoking exploration of the concept of home through the lens of design. With its diverse range of installations and interactive spaces, the exhibition invites visitors to consider the many facets of home and how it shapes our lives.
