Each year, the Central West Astronomical Society (CWAS) in New South Wales hosts AstroFest, an astronomy festival that invites amateur photographers and scientists worldwide to share their best astronomical images. This year’s grand prize went to Stefan Buda for his tonal moonscape, “The Lunar Apennines,” which offers a detailed portrayal of Montes Apenninus.

The competition features various categories such as Deep Sky, Solar System, Wide-Field, and Nightscapes. Participants can submit photographs capturing phenomena like distant nebulae, spiral galaxies, the Milky Way, and aurora australis illuminating stunning terrestrial vistas. A 2027 calendar showcasing the winning images is available for purchase, and the complete gallery of top shots can be viewed on the award’s website.
