Exploring the Vibrant World of UCLA’s 2025 MFA Exhibition

As an aspiring artist, I once grappled with the distinction between being a student and being an artist. However, after immersing myself in the graduate art exhibitions across Los Angeles, particularly the University of California Los Angeles’s MFA exhibition, my perspective has shifted. The creativity, experimentation, and boldness displayed by these students have convinced me that being a student is not a limitation but a pathway to true artistic expression.

The installations at the exhibition are a testament to the students’ innovative approach to art. Ayla Gizlice’s “Rumble, Rumble, Rumble” transforms a gallery into a whimsical campsite with strings and floor cushions, inviting visitors to an imaginary gathering. On the other hand, Harrison Kinnane Smith’s “Story Poles” uses scaffolding and wooden boards to create a narrative about LA housing developments, blurring the lines between art and reality.

Student sculptures, photography, and videos challenge traditional art norms and societal conventions. Maren Karlson’s paintings and collages invite viewers to explore the intricacies of machines and human anatomy. Zenobia’s steel sculpture pierces through walls, symbolizing a bold defiance of boundaries. D.A. Gonzales sheds light on government surveillance with reflective prints, while Misty EunJoo Choi’s surreal kitchen installation challenges the mundane aspects of domestic life.

What sets these students apart is their fearlessness, playfulness, and commitment to their craft, especially in a time of political uncertainty. They create space for new forms of artistic expression and redefine the boundaries of art. In a world where creativity is often stifled by conformity, these students remind us of the power of imagination and innovation.

It challenges us to rethink our preconceived notions of art and invites us to embrace the limitless possibilities of creativity. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the future of art at this groundbreaking exhibition.
