The clean energy economy has been a driving force for positive change over the past decade, with companies investing heavily in battery manufacturing, solar and wind energy, and electric vehicles in the United States. However, a recent report from the clean energy think tank E2 reveals a concerning trend – while the rest of the world is accelerating its transition to clean energy, the U.S. is experiencing a slowdown.

In 2025, the U.S. saw a significant increase in cancellations for clean energy projects, with roughly $35 billion worth of projects abandoned compared to just $3.4 billion in cancellations in the previous two years combined. This abrupt shift is largely attributed to the policies of the Trump administration, which prioritized fossil fuels over renewable energy sources.

One of the first actions taken by President Trump was to pause leasing and permitting for offshore wind projects, leading to developers putting their plans on hold. Additionally, funding for clean energy projects was cut, and policies supporting the industry were either cancelled or revised. The passage of the One Big Beautiful Act further impacted the electric vehicle industry by ending tax credits for renewable energy production and consumer incentives for EV purchases.

The repercussions of these policy changes were felt most acutely in the electric vehicle and battery manufacturing sectors, which collectively lost $21 billion in investment and an estimated 48,000 potential jobs. States like Michigan, Illinois, Georgia, and New York were hit particularly hard, with billions of dollars in clean energy investments lost.

Despite these setbacks, some companies have redirected their investments rather than abandoning them entirely. Ford, for example, adjusted its plans for an Ohio Assembly Plant to focus on gas-powered and hybrid vehicles instead of all-electric models. This flexibility allows for potential retrofitting for electric vehicle production in the future if market conditions and policy outlooks improve.

While the current landscape for clean energy in the U.S. may seem challenging, there is hope for a resurgence in the industry. By maintaining existing facilities and being prepared to pivot back to clean energy projects when the time is right, companies can position themselves for success in a more supportive environment. It is crucial for policymakers to prioritize clean energy initiatives to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for the industry.
