During the early 20th century, the American military faced a morale crisis as troops engaged in unhealthy activities like excessive drinking and risky behavior. Recognizing the need for positive influences, private organizations such as the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross began offering entertainment options to keep soldiers occupied and boost their spirits. As World War II approached, President Franklin D. Roosevelt called for the establishment of a more permanent solution, leading to the formation of the United Service Organizations (USO) on February 4, 1941.

Bringing together various organizations like the YMCA, YWCA, and the Salvation Army, the USO aimed to centralize morale efforts for the military. Recreational centers were set up to provide soldiers with a place to unwind, offering coffee, doughnuts, and social activities. The USO recognized the importance of entertainment in boosting morale and decided to bring Hollywood stars to the front lines. Comedians, musicians, and dancers were flown in to perform for troops stationed around the world, starting shortly after the USO’s inception.

Legendary figures like Bob Hope and Marilyn Monroe became synonymous with USO tours, entertaining service members during and after World War II. Bob Hope embarked on a 50-year partnership with the USO, while Marilyn Monroe captivated audiences in Korea in 1954, performing for thousands of troops in just a few days. Even during the Vietnam War, celebrities like Nancy Sinatra volunteered their time to uplift troops’ spirits through music and entertainment.

The USO continues its mission today, providing support to military personnel through recreational centers, care packages, and virtual performances. Celebrities such as the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, Katy Perry, and Stephen Colbert still volunteer their time to boost troops’ morale. From its humble beginnings during World War II to its ongoing efforts in the present day, the USO remains dedicated to supporting and uplifting the spirits of those who serve in the armed forces.
