The vast ocean is home to many creatures, each with its own unique traits and abilities. Among them, there is one beast that strikes fear even into the heart of the mighty great white shark, long considered the apex predator of the sea.

Off the coast of South Africa, a pair of orcas, also known as killer whales, have gained a reputation for terrorizing white sharks to the point where the sharks have been forced to flee their own feeding grounds. Now, a completely different pod of orcas has been observed hunting white sharks off the coast of Mexico, showcasing a remarkable and ingenious hunting strategy.

These orcas, led by a male named Moctezuma, have developed a taste for the rich, nutritious livers of white sharks. The orcas of Moctezuma’s pod have honed their hunting technique to immobilize the sharks completely before extracting their prized livers.

Marine biologist Erick Higuera Rivas, who has been studying these orcas, notes that their behavior reflects their advanced intelligence, strategic thinking, and sophisticated social learning. The hunting techniques are passed down through generations within their pods, showcasing a level of coordination and skill that is truly remarkable.

One fascinating aspect of this behavior is the orcas’ ability to exploit the tonic immobility response exhibited by white sharks when flipped upside down. This behavior renders the sharks defenseless, allowing the orcas to extract their nutrient-rich livers with ease.

The orcas of the Gulf of California, including Moctezuma’s pod, are known for being opportunistic generalists when it comes to hunting. However, the emergence of a subgroup within the pod that specializes in hunting elasmobranchs like sharks and rays is a significant development.

Through careful observation and documentation, researchers have captured the hunts on film, showcasing the coordinated and strategic approach taken by the orcas. The hunts, which took place in August 2020 and 2022, involved a group of orcas working together to flip juvenile white sharks upside down and extract their livers.

The researchers believe that targeting juvenile white sharks may be a strategic move to minimize the risk of injury to the hunting orcas. The livers of white sharks are prized for their high fat and oil content, making them a valuable source of sustenance for hungry orcas.

Further research is needed to understand the frequency of such attacks and their impact on white shark populations in the Gulf of California. By studying the feeding behavior of killer whales in the region, researchers hope to identify critical habitats and implement conservation measures to protect these magnificent creatures.

The extraordinary hunting behavior of orcas, as observed in Moctezuma’s pod, sheds light on the complex dynamics of predator-prey relationships in the ocean. It serves as a reminder of the incredible diversity and intelligence of marine life, offering valuable insights into the delicate balance of the marine ecosystem.
