In 2007, Ali Nesin embarked on a mission to tackle a mathematics problem by creating a unique solution – a village. Nesin, a renowned Turkish mathematician, observed a concerning trend among students in his classes at Istanbul Bilgi University. Despite coming from some of Turkey’s most prestigious schools, these students were struggling with mathematics, relying on rote memorization rather than critical thinking. Determined to change this trend, Nesin conceptualized and established the Nesin Mathematics Village in western Turkey.

Photographer Piero Castellano recently captured the essence of the Maths Village through his lens. One striking image shows Nesin teaching a class outdoors, with a blackboard set against a backdrop of trees, vines, and stone walls. According to Castellano, these natural elements are integral to Nesin’s vision for the village. The secluded location allows students to fully immerse themselves in mathematics and communal living, fostering a more holistic and engaged learning experience.

At the Maths Village, there are no traditional exams. Instead, students actively participate in chores and communal activities, creating a utopian environment that feels like a separate world. The emphasis is on fostering a deep understanding of mathematics through experiential learning and collaboration.

In 2018, Nesin was honored with the prestigious Leelavati Prize by the International Mathematical Union. During his acceptance speech, Nesin shared some of his favorite moments from the village, all centered around the joy of witnessing students truly engage with mathematical concepts and think critically.

The Maths Village embodies a unique approach to education, where students are encouraged to think creatively, work together, and explore mathematics in a natural and immersive setting. As captured by Castellano’s photographs, the village exudes a sense of tranquility and intellectual curiosity, creating an inspiring space for learning and growth.

Overall, the Nesin Mathematics Village stands as a testament to the transformative power of innovative educational models and the importance of fostering a deep passion for learning in students. Through its unconventional approach to mathematics education, the village continues to inspire and empower students to think critically, collaborate, and embrace the joy of learning.
