In 2007, Ali Nesin embarked on a mission to tackle a mathematics problem by creating a unique solution – a village. Nesin, a renowned Turkish mathematician, observed a concerning trend among students in his classes at Istanbul Bilgi University. Despite coming from some of Turkey’s most prestigious schools, these students were struggling with mathematics, relying on rote memorization rather than critical thinking. Determined to change this trend, Nesin conceptualized and established the Nesin Mathematics Village in western Turkey.
Photographer Piero Castellano recently captured the essence of the Maths Village through his lens. In 2018, Nesin was honored with the prestigious Leelavati Prize by the International Mathematical Union. During his acceptance speech, Nesin shared some of his favorite moments from the village, all centered around the joy of witnessing students truly engage with mathematical concepts and think critically.
