A shocking incident occurred in Las Vegas when a thief was caught stealing a casket with a body still inside from a local funeral home. Patricia Sierra, a 47-year-old woman, is facing charges of burglary, grand larceny, and disturbing human remains in connection with the disturbing incident that took place on August 27. The entire event was captured on surveillance footage, which was later reported by KLAS.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police received a call around 3 a.m. reporting a body lying face down in front of the Affordable Cremation & Burial Service funeral home, with the casket abandoned on the sidewalk nearby. Upon arrival, officers found the body with its feet covered with plastic bags, lying face down on some rocks near the front walkway of the property, as detailed in an arrest report obtained by USA Today.
The deceased person had arrived at the funeral home on August 20 for a viewing scheduled on August 26, just a day before the bizarre theft took place. Subsequently, police reviewed the surveillance footage, which depicted a woman, identified as Sierra, breaking into the business by shattering the front window and unlocking the door from the inside. The footage shows Sierra entering the viewing room, dragging the casket out of the front door, and making multiple trips in and out of the funeral home before leaving the scene.
Two days after the incident, Sierra was recognized by someone at a nearby convenience store and subsequently arrested by the authorities. During her interaction with the police, Sierra expressed remorse and claimed that she was not acting maliciously. She attributed the incident to a substance abuse problem that often causes her to black out. When shown the surveillance footage of the robbery, Sierra stated that she did not remember committing the act and blamed it on drinking six beers, causing her to blackout.
Following her arrest, a judge set bail at $11,000, and as of Wednesday, Sierra remains in custody. A representative for Affordable Cremation and Burial Service mentioned that there is an ongoing investigation and refrained from providing further comments at this time. The unsettling incident has left the community in shock and raised concerns about the safety and security of funeral homes in the area.
