Trump’s strong influence over the Republican Party is partly due to his strategy of ending the political careers of Republicans who oppose him by backing primary challengers against them.
This influence is particularly evident among House Republicans, who fear facing a fate similar to Liz Cheney. Cheney opposed Trump by participating in the 1/6 Select Committee, leading to Trump supporting a primary challenger against her, resulting in her losing her seat.

The risk of being “Cheneyed” keeps many House Republicans aligned with Trump, which makes the situation with Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky a significant turning point.
Trump is set on making an example of Massie after he co-sponsored a push to release the Epstein files. Although Massie is neither a Democrat nor a progressive, he has consistently advocated for justice for Epstein’s survivors.
Trump has frequently endorsed Massie’s primary challenger, Ed Gallrein, including a recent post where he stated:

However, recent polls indicate that Massie is outperforming Trump, and the reasons behind Massie’s lead suggest a decline in the MAGA movement.
