Tiffany & Co. is commemorating America’s 250th anniversary by reintroducing a significant piece from its historical collection. The iconic jeweler will reveal the restored Astronomical Clock at The Landmark on Fifth Avenue, showcasing a masterpiece that has been out of public view for over a century.

This exquisite clock was originally crafted for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, a pivotal event that highlighted American innovation and creative prowess at the end of the nineteenth century. Tiffany acquired the clock in 2025 and dedicated seven months to its restoration in their Geneva watchmaking workshops, ensuring the piece was operational while maintaining its original craftsmanship.

The Astronomical Clock boasts 21 intricate features, ranking it among the most complex timepieces created in the U.S. Notably, it includes a display that marks the years since American independence, which will read “250th” in 2026, perfectly coinciding with the nation’s semiquincentennial celebrations.

“The restoration of the Astronomical Clock reflects Tiffany & Co.’s enduring commitment to artistry, innovation, and cultural stewardship,” stated Anthony Ledru, president and CEO of Tiffany & Co. “As we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we are honored to share this remarkable work of American history with the public.”

The Astronomical Clock Carries Historical Weight

The Astronomical Clock is more than just a technical marvel; it is a testament to the state of American craftsmanship in 1893, a time when the nation was keenly promoting its industrial and artistic capabilities on the world stage. This exposition attracted over 27 million visitors, placing American innovation alongside Europe’s best. A Tiffany clock being featured was a deliberate declaration of both the company’s and the nation’s aspirations.

Tiffany’s place in American luxury history is distinct from its European counterparts. While European brands often have roots in royal patronage and ancient ateliers, Tiffany’s legacy is deeply tied to the evolution of the United States. The brand has crafted iconic trophies for the NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball, embedding itself into the nation’s cultural fabric beyond mere luxury. The Astronomical Clock is part of this tradition, bearing historical significance beyond its commercial value.

A Pattern of Preservation and Reacquisition

The restoration of the Astronomical Clock is the second major heritage acquisition by Tiffany in recent years. In 2024, the company reacquired the gold pocket watch awarded to RMS Carpathia Captain Arthur Rostron for his efforts in rescuing Titanic survivors, renewing interest in a significant chapter of Tiffany’s watchmaking history.

These acquisitions highlight Tiffany’s strategic focus on reclaiming and contextualizing its historical artifacts, linking its current identity with its documented past achievements. This strategy aligns with a broader trend in the luxury sector, where brands delve into their archives to enrich their narratives. While European brands often look back to centuries-old heritage, Tiffany’s story is distinctly American.

The Astronomical Clock epitomizes this American essence. Restored in Geneva and unveiled in New York to celebrate a national milestone, the clock symbolizes Tiffany’s longstanding role in American craftsmanship and ceremonial significance. As the nation reflects on its 250-year journey, Tiffany’s positioning in this narrative holds profound cultural resonance.
