Reflecting on the Wisdom of Stephan Harding and Schumacher College

As a former student of Schumacher College, I had the privilege of learning from some of the most renowned thinkers in the field of ecology and sustainability. Our learning community was enriched by the presence of guests such as James Lovelock, David Suzuki, Rupert Sheldrake, and many others. These individuals, whose names are synonymous with the Resurgence and Ecologist magazine, brought a wealth of knowledge and insight to our discussions.

Sensing the Interconnectedness of Life

One of the most transformative experiences during my time at Schumacher College was a Deep Time Walk with Stephan along the Devon coastline. His storytelling abilities brought to life the intricate web of connections that exist in nature. From the rain to the river Dart to the phytoplankton in the oceans, Stephan showed us the magnificence of interbeing – the profound interconnectedness of all living beings.

Stephan also introduced me to C.G. Jung’s ‘four ways of knowing’: sensing, feeling, intuiting, and thinking. While thinking often takes precedence in our education system, Stephan emphasized the importance of embracing all four ways of knowing to truly understand the world around us.

The Legacy of Stephan Harding

Stephan Harding was not just a brilliant mind, but a humble and integral individual who embodied the principles he taught. His dedication to becoming a vessel for life’s regenerative impulse inspired us all to reconnect with our innate capacity for sensing, feeling, and intuiting.

As we reflect on the contributions of Stephan Harding and Schumacher College, we are reminded of the transformative power of education. Just as the Renaissance was born out of the intellectual exchange in 15th century Florence, the teachings of Stephan and Schumacher College have the potential to spark a new era of Gaian cultures.

Although Schumacher College is currently closed to students, the legacy of Stephan Harding lives on through the thousands of individuals he inspired. As we navigate the challenges of our time, may we remember the wisdom of Stephan and strive to be stewards of a regenerative future.
