Tom Selleck, the beloved actor known for his roles in Magnum, P.I. and Blue Bloods, recently opened up about some of the regrets he has had in his career. Despite his success in Hollywood, Selleck admits that there are moments he wishes things had turned out differently.
Born in Detroit and raised in Los Angeles, Selleck initially had dreams of becoming a professional basketball player. He even earned a spot on the University of Southern California basketball team. However, his basketball career was short-lived, as he only played in seven games and scored four points before ultimately deciding to pursue acting.
One of the biggest regrets in Selleck’s career was missing out on the iconic role of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Selleck was originally cast as the adventurous archaeologist, but due to his commitment to Magnum, P.I., he had to pass on the role. The part ultimately went to Harrison Ford, solidifying Ford’s place as a Hollywood legend.
Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Selleck shared, “I couldn’t get out of my contract to do Magnum, and the role went to Harrison Ford instead. Was I disappointed? Of course. I could have done both Magnum and Indiana Jones, but CBS wouldn’t let me. But Magnum turned out to be a pretty good consolation prize. Things worked out pretty well for me and for Harrison, I think.”
Even Karen Allen, who starred alongside Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark, acknowledged Selleck’s initial casting, stating, “Tom wasn’t just considered, he was cast initially. He had the role. I think one of the great regrets of his career is not having the chance to play Indiana Jones.”
Despite these missed opportunities, Selleck remains grateful for his successful acting career and the support of his family. He continues to be a fan favorite, with his role as Frank Reagan in Blue Bloods earning him critical acclaim. Selleck’s talent and charisma have solidified his status as a Hollywood icon, and his fans eagerly anticipate his future projects.
