In a rather optimistic twist of political strategy, Republicans had envisioned a wave of patriotic fervor rallying the American populace behind Donald Trump as he embarked on military action against Iran. However, the reality appears to be more akin to a sinking ship than a soaring eagle.

Trump’s military engagement is already more unpopular than the Vietnam War. Now, as a cherry on top of this dubious cake, the administration is seeking tens of billions of dollars in additional funding to finance the Iran conflict.

Reports indicate that the White House is even mulling over the deployment of ground troops to Iran—a suggestion that has drawn sharp criticism from Senator Chris Murphy during his appearance on CNN’s State of the Union.

Senator Murphy articulated his concerns:

This war is rapidly evolving into a calamity. If the President proceeds with the idea of deploying ground forces, we could be looking at dozens, if not hundreds, of new American casualties. It seems this administration is struggling to grasp how to achieve its stated aims. Their objectives seem to shift with the wind. One moment we’re pursuing regime change, and the next, we’re not. While the administration has maintained a consistent focus on dismantling Iran’s nuclear program, they fail to realize that knowledge cannot be obliterated by bombs. Even if they were to undertake the exceedingly perilous step of sending American ground troops to extract enriched uranium, the underlying expertise will remain intact. Unless a new leadership is installed in Iran, that country will merely rebuild its capabilities the moment American forces withdraw.

This is a colossal waste of resources. Daily, we chase goals that the administration is incapable of realizing, including the misguided belief that military force can eradicate the know-how necessary for Iran to develop a nuclear weapon.
