“True Detective” Creator Nic Pizzolatto Teases Potential Return of Rust Cohle and Marty Hart
Original “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto recently shared on the “Nothing Left Unsaid” podcast that he has a new story idea that could potentially bring back the iconic characters of Rust Cohle and Marty Hart. Played by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the first season of the HBO series, these characters left a lasting impression on viewers, with many still considering Season 1 as the show’s best. Both McConaughey and Harrelson received Emmy nominations for their performances in the 2014 season.
Regarding the possibility of revisiting Cohle and Hart, Pizzolatto stated, “I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that who knows, maybe we’ll do it one day. It’s character-based again, that’s all I can say for now. But it’s something that has been on my mind. We’ve discussed the idea of reuniting to bring this story to life, and I believe the actors are open to it. The decision ultimately lies in whether or not it will come to fruition.”
McConaughey and Harrelson have maintained a close friendship since their time on “True Detective” and are currently working together on an Apple TV+ comedy series where they play fictionalized versions of themselves. McConaughey has always expressed his admiration for the show, stating in an interview with Variety that Season 1 holds a special place in his heart.
Reflecting on his experience with the series, McConaughey shared, “My favorite season — and I feel like I can say this objectively — is Season 1. I thought it was incredible television and a great series. I watched it weekly like everyone else, and it was a true event for me. Even though I was part of it, I was still captivated by the storytelling and the performances. It was truly one of the standout moments in TV for me.”
After Season 1, Pizzolatto returned for “True Detective” Season 2, which received mixed reviews, and then went on to produce a more successful third season in 2017. However, he decided to step away from the franchise in 2019, citing a need to focus on personal matters and his role as a father. This led to HBO moving forward with a fourth season without him, helmed by Jodie Foster and created by Issa Lopez.
Pizzolatto explained, “I made the decision to walk away from my contract in 2019. I believe if I had delivered a solid script for another season, HBO would have greenlit it. But I was emotionally drained from working on such dark material and needed to prioritize my family responsibilities. Stepping away allowed me to be present for my daughter, and that was the right choice for me at that time.”
With Pizzolatto no longer involved in “True Detective,” HBO is moving forward with a fifth season, with Issa Lopez returning as showrunner from the previous installment. The future of the series remains uncertain, but fans are hopeful for the potential return of Cohle and Hart in a new chapter of their story.
